EQUIVET AUSTRAILA - EQUINE INFO - PERIOSTEAL STRIP - POST-OPERATIVE CARE
Post operative care will involve confinement of mare and foal to a stable yard or small paddock to reduce concussion on the affected limb for a period of initially two weeks. Additional confinement may be required depending on the speed of correction and severity of the condition. Ideally confinement should be continued until the leg has returned to relatively normal alignment.
Antibiotics will be administered at the time of surgery and should be continued for 3 days post operatively. The foal's temperature should be monitored daily, normal temperature is 38°C.
The surgical area will be bandaged and dressings should be re-dressed at 3 days and 7 days post operatively. Please ensure that bandages are monitored twice daily to ensure that the surgery site is protected. If bandages should loosen or slip, please contact the surgery to arrange rebandaging.
Skin sutures can be removed at 10-14 days. Corrective trimming of the hoof of the affected limb as advised should be performed weekly. A corrective shoe may be required in some cases.
Please ensure that mares are not overfed whilst confined. If you have any additional questions or concerns please contact the surgery.
