EQUINE VETERINARY SERVICES AND BREEDING CENTRE - EQUIVET AUSTRALIA HOMEPAGE
FOR RICHER, FOR POORER; IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH!
ABOUT WILSON'S EQUINE VETERINARY SERVICES
Wilson's Equine Veterinary Services is a small specialty equine practice owned by
Equivet ( Australia ) Pty, Ltd and directed by Max Wilson & his partner Robyn Woodward.
The practice operates from a little valley at Southbrook on the Darling Downs just
thirty kilometres south west of Toowoomba; the largest inland city in Australia.
Most of the top thoroughbred studs on the Downs can be found within a 40 km radius of us &
we service a large proportion of them but as the slogan says; we service everybody from the
largest to the smallest, from the large stud to the individual with one horse in their backyard.
From very humble beginnings when I established the business in rented premises in Oakey in 1989 we have moved to our Southbrook base & established a clientele of over 7,500 representing some 20 Thoroughbred studs, 2 large Standardbred studs & numerous Quarterhorse, Australian Stockhorse, Warmblood & Arabian studs. In total the practice looks after the reproductive needs of almost 2,000 mares. We are proud to have amongst our clientele some of the finest studs on the downs including Highgrove, Windemere, Lyndhurst Stud, Greenvale Park, Wattlebrae, Almavale, Furlong, Croxley, Canning Downs, Noralla, and the large Standardbred studs of Burwood & Egmont Park.
ABOUT EQUIVET AUSTALIA EQUINE BREEDING CENTRE
At Southbrook we have also established an Equine Breeding Centre where we can take
problem mares for intensive treatment; mares to foal down & foals requiring intensive treatment.
Furthermore, the centre attracts over 200 mares each breeding season mostly Quarter Horses,
Australian Stockhorses, Arabians & Warmbloods for artificial breeding with chilled,
transported or frozen semen from all over the world.
Robyn also does her embryo transfers there with great success. We also perform numerous semen collections & evaluations & have a quarantine facility so that we can freeze semen for export. We do not operate a full scale surgical facility as there is currently a high quality equine surgery facility available & the economics of the industry (& the horse's best interests) are best served if we support that facility.
The secret of our success is undoubtedly that we have managed to keep the business small & personal while maintaining state of the art equipment & expertise. We know what we can do & we do it well. If we can't handle it ourselves, we send it to somebody who can.
I am a very lucky man as in Robyn I have my perfect partner, not only is she my soul mate
but she shares my passion for horses & has the best qualifications. We also have Celia who
has been with us for over 10 years now & is meticulous in her work & loves her horses.
Between us we can boast 75 years of experience!!
Each year for the last 10 years we have operated a reciprocal system with two U.K. practices where they send us a vet to help with our breeding season & we go over & help them with theirs. John Newcombe was the first to come & in addition he has sent us his partner Jenny East, Rupert Gunstone , Ewa Korbutiak & Thomas Kock. Initially it was his practice that I went to help in the Midlands but for the last few years I have been going to his very good friend Jonathan Pycock in Yorkshire. Jonathan operates a speciality equine reproduction service similar to ours. For the last 3 years Robyn has come too & we get paid to drive around James Herriot's Yorkshire at the height of the English summer. How good is that??
I was fortunate to spend my formative years as a vet working for the legendary
Prof Reg Pascoe & although it was tough, I doubt there is a better training
ground in the country. I worked there for 16 years & developed my interest
in stud medicine before setting up my own practice in 1989.
Horse blood runs in my veins as my mother is an Inglis & and I have worked with horses
all my life from my very early years at Karara when we rode 5 miles to school each day,
threw our saddles under the school & let the horses go in the school yard. What would the
insurance companies say about that these days?
